Explore the World with FSU's Languages
At our wonderful Florida State University, several programs have a language requirement that students must fulfil in order to graduate. Most notably, this is a requirement for any student in the College of Arts and Science, which is the largest program that includes the greatest variety of majors offered at FSU. Of course, there are a handful of students who test out of this prerequisite, but for the majority of students it’s a speed bump of sorts in their academic track.
But taking a language course doesn’t have to be a total drag! In fact, FSU has an eclectic assortment of interesting and/or useful languages to choose from. I mean, you could just take three semesters of elementary Spanish and call it a day, but why not enjoy your time here at Florida State? One benefit of attending such a well-resourced school, is that the programs offered are diverse and state of the art. Why not take advantage of it, and learn a cool new language?

Majors in Modern Languages or Linguistics
Co-Major- “Co-majors allow students to study two different languages while completing one single major. Students who complete a co-major are not required to complete a minor. Students may co-major in Chinese & Japanese or may choose two languages from the following list: French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish.”
Middle East Center- “Welcome to the Middle East Center (MEC) at Florida State University. Created in 2006, the MEC’s main objective is to provide an academic environment for students from a multitude of disciplines to develop a deeper understanding of the Middle East. The MEC also administers FSU’s Bachelor of Arts in Middle Eastern Studies, as well as minors in Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies.”
The College of Arts and Sciences requires its students to complete an additional minor or double major alongside their core major. Why not complete a minor or double major in a language of your choice? For instance, if you plan on graduating with a science degree with the intention of going on the attend medical school, learning Latin may be applicable to medical terminology.
